City of HeritageAnnual Fire Hydrant Testing

It is very important to regularly conduct the fire hydrant testing program to assure your safety. Testing and inspection of the Fire Hydrants in our City is of utmost importance to ensure an adequate water supply to extinguish any fire in the City of Talladega. It is required by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA 291) that fire hydrants in the City be tested in order to provide critical documentation for the fire department on water pressure to ensure that emergency responses for extinguishing fires can be provided. Testing the fire hydrants is also required by 1.S.0. (Insurance Service Organization) in order to lower insurance cost for citizens.

The City of Talladega Water & Sewer Department and Fire Department will be testing fire hydrants throughout the City. Testing will begin on November 10, 2008. You will receive notification (a door hanger will be placed on your door with the date of testing) one week prior to the actual week that hydrants are being tested in your area.

During this time water services may be disrupted in your area. Avoid washing clothing on the day your area is scheduled for hydrant testing. Once service is restored you may notice temporary discoloration of your water. This discoloration is due to rust particles from the inside of iron water mains. While we will make every attempt to flush this rust from the lines, a small amount may remain in the water. This rust is not hazardous; however it could cause staining of clothing or water appliances. If you experience discolored water, please run your outside faucet until the water flows clear (approximately 30 minutes). If your water does not clear after 30 minutes, please call our Main Office at 256-362-4439.

The cooperation and understanding of all residents during the hydrant-testing program is appreciated.
