The New Addition
The Talladega Public Library broke ground for a new addition in February of this year. The expansion will include a genealogy research and archive room, a conference/meeting room and an expansion of the existing children's room.
The $480,000 new construction will include a hallway that is being considered for a Hall of Heroes project commemorating Talladega County veterans who served during wartime. More information on the Hall of Heroes project will be forthcoming. Added parking for the library and for Heritage Hall is presently being considered. The increased use of the two facilities is requiring the added parking space. New lighting for the handicapped parking area for the library and Heritage Hall is on the drawing board as well.
The new addition to the library came about as a result of a large increase in the Summer Reading Program over the last two years as well as more requests for information regarding the genealogy and history of Talladega and surrounding areas. Providing family history and local history information is an important part of our day-to-day services and more space was required to research and archive information. The Summer Reading Program increased from a couple of hundred in 2002 to over 2,275 in 2004. This huge jump required more space as well.
