City leaders invite community to view new storm shelter

(Talladega, AL) The City of Talladega invites the community to view the new storm shelter at 809 South Street East in Jemison Park, on Thursday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

“In addition to giving community members an opportunity to look inside the shelter, we hope that Thursday’s event will promote storm safety,” said Interim City Manager Danny Warwick. “Most of all, we want people to know where they can go in the event of severe weather.”

Heavy winds can quickly lead to dangerous conditions, including tornadoes. Talladega's storm shelter will provide a safe place for the unhoused and others to go in the event of severe weather.

The 10-ft x 24-ft shelter can accommodate up to 48 individuals and withstand winds of up to 250 miles per hour.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) identified 1,341 tornadoes in the United States in 2022. Of these, 31% occurred in three states: Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas.  During tornadoes, people are advised to avoid rooms with windows and take cover on the lowest floor, in the smallest room, such as a closet or bathroom, or in an interior hallway.  Unfortunately, many homes, such as mobile homes, are entirely unsafe during tornadoes.

The new storm shelter will provide a much-needed safe place for residents.
