Mayor Hall presents proclamation to Diaper Row

(Talladega, AL) Mayor Ashton Hall recently presented a proclamation to Diaper Row at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and proclaimed September 23 through September 29, 2024, as National Diaper Need Awareness Week in Talladega.

"Diaper need, the condition of not having a sufficient supply of diapers to keep babies and toddlers clean, dry and healthy, can adversely affect the health and wellbeing of our community’s most vulnerable population," Mayor Hall stated. "Talladega is fortunate and proud to be home to Diaper Row, a trusted community-based organization that recognizes and addresses need."

Residents can help keep babies clean, dry and healthy by contributing to the City of Talladega’s diaper drive during the month of September. Diapers may be dropped off at City Hall, Talladega Armstrong-Osborne Public Library, and the Spring Street Recreation Center. All proceeds will benefit Diaper Row.

“This is an opportunity for city employees and all Talladega residents to assist our community's youngest and most vulnerable population,” said City Manager Derrick Swanson. “Studies indicate that approximately fifty percent of U.S. families report having diaper insecurity, and many families right here in Talladega desperately need the diapers that St. Peter’s Episcopal Church distributes each month.”

“Diapers are needed in all sizes, from newborn to six, but our greatest need is for sizes four, five and six,” said Lynn Sims of Diaper Row, which distributes diapers on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

"A study by Bundles of Hope found that eighty-five percent of families that receive diapers use the money they save on diapers to pay utility bills," added Sims, who welcomes volunteers interested in assisting at Diaper Row.

"Last year, citizens of Talladega donated 1,203 diapers to Diaper Row during the city's drive, and we look forward to once again assisting an organization that means so much to our community," said City Clerk Joanna Medlen. “This a great opportunity to give to families in need, so we hope that people contribute to the drive and help spread the word."
