April 9, 2024
(Talladega, AL) Mayor Ashton Hall presented the family of former Mayor Jerry Gene Cooper Sr. with a posthumous proclamation celebrating the “indelible mark” Mr. Cooper left upon the City of Talladega.
“Jerry Gene Cooper’s tenure as mayor from 2015 to 2019 exemplified leadership, integrity and a profound commitment to the well-being and progress of Talladega,” said Mayor Hall, who read the proclamation during a Talladega City Council meeting on April 8, 2024.
The proclamation highlighted Mr. Cooper’s tireless work ethic during his distinguished career with the United States Postal Service as well as his dedication to public service. The Talladega native was also remembered for his warmth, kindness and generosity. He often gave sweet treats to children in the community, which earned him the nickname “Candy Man.”
His son, Jay Cooper; daughter, Rebecca Beard; and sister, Sandra Jones, were present to accept the proclamation from Mayor Hall.
