September is Suicide Prevention Month

(Talladega,AL) City of Talladega first responders recently joined veterans, community leaders and others who gathered together at Central Alabama Community College (CACC) to help spread awareness of suicide rates among veterans in conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

During the annual ceremony, which is held in September, 139 flags were placed in front of the community college in memory of the 139 Alabama veterans who committed suicide in 2024.

"We are standing with veterans and first responders during the month of September," said Fire Chief Danny Warwick. "We pause to remember the silent battles carried by those who serve. As veterans, firefighters, police officers, and EMTs, we wear strength on the outside—but inside, the weight can grow heavy. Too often, that weight has cost us brothers and sisters, not in combat or in the line of duty, but in the fight within."

"I speak not just as an observer, but as a veteran of 34 years, having deployed three times. I’ve seen the burden our service members carry. I’ve also felt the pain of losing five comrades—not to battle, but to struggles they carried alone. Their loss weighs heavily on me, and it reminds me why this day matters."

"True courage is not only found on the battlefield or at an emergency scene—it’s found in raising your hand and saying, 'I need help.' Asking for help is not weakness; it is strength. If you are struggling, know this: you are not alone. Your life matters. Your service matters. And we still need you here."

"Let’s honor the fallen by fighting for the living—listening, supporting, and standing together, just as we always have," Chief Warwick said.

Veterans having suicidal thoughts are encouraged to call 988 or 1-800-273-8255.
