Talladega acquires storm shelter
March 14, 2024
(Talladega, AL) Due to the growing threat of tornadoes, Talladega has acquired a potentially life-saving storm shelter.
“Heavy winds can quickly lead to dangerous conditions, including tornadoes," said Interim City Manager Danny Warwick. "Fortunately, Talladega's new storm shelter will provide a safe place for the unhoused and others to go in the event of severe weather."
The 10-ft x 24-ft shelter, located at 809 South Street East in Jemison Park, can accommodate up to 48 individuals and withstand winds of up to 250 miles per hour.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) identified 1,341 tornadoes in the United States in 2022. Of these, 31% occurred in three states: Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas.
During tornadoes, people are often advised to avoid rooms with windows and take cover on the lowest floor, in the smallest room, such as a closet or bathroom, or in an interior hallway. Unfortunately, many homes, such as mobile homes, are entirely unsafe during tornadoes. The new storm shelter will provide a much-needed safe place for residents.
Talladega leaders plan to install a second storm shelter in the near future.
