E-Recycling Day diverts electronic waste from landfills

E-Recycling Day diverts electronic waste from landfills

(Talladega, AL)  The City of Talladega semi-annual E-Recycling Day event at Wehadkee Yarn Mills assisted residents with spring cleaning while also helping to prevent 9496 pounds of unwanted electronics from ending up in landfills.

Items accepted include computers, monitors, keyboards, cables, power supplies, printers, cell phones, printer cartridges, televisions, Christmas lights, hair dryers, curling irons, microwaves, VCRs, DVD players, telephones, battery backups, scanners, extension cords and small household appliances.

City Clerk Joanna Medlen, who has spearheaded the e-recycling drive since 2019, said, “Prior to our e-recycling event, we always encourage community members to begin setting aside unwanted electronic items. Given the ever-increasing number of electronic gadgets being produced, promoting recycling and hosting an E-Recycling Day is more important than ever before.”

Through a number of new and ongoing initiatives, the city seeks to assist residents in properly disposing of unwanted electronics while also expanding awareness of the value of conserving resources.

In addition to hosting e-recycling drives, the city utilized Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) funding to help upgrade its recycling center, educate residents on the importance of recycling, and reduce dependency on landfills.  A grant for $15,000 was used to upgrade the building where recycling center staff members work. An $11,000 ADEM grant is being used to educate the community on the importance of recycling, which promotes a cleaner community and improves the environment.
