Talladega Main Street ambient lighting ceremony

(Talladega, AL) Talladega Main Street (TMS) invites the community to celebrate the addition of ambient lighting around the historic courthouse square on Tuesday, November 28, at 6 p.m. The lighting initiative, which was spearheaded by the TMS Board of Directors, TMS Design Committee and Executive Director Cathy Roehrig, will help create a more vibrant city by enhancing the downtown community.

“As a general practice, business end of day in the TMS district comes at or before sunset for most businesses. TMS hopes to shed light on the fact that business owners in the district can operate after dark, and even provide some evening social events,” said Talladega Main Street Design Committee Chair Nicholas Pennington. “We hope that people will stay for a while longer on the square - under the lights, and help make community members and visitors aware that our downtown doesn’t close when the sun goes down.”

TMS Executive Director Cathy Roehrig, who commended business owners and building owners in the district for their enthusiastic support of the lighting initiative, said, "We are pleased to have completed the initial lighting of the square before the city’s 2023 Christmas on the Square event. The strong support from Talladega City Manager Mr. Seddrick Hill, Sr. went beyond words. He sent in a team from Public Works and Parks and Recreation to consult on the lights to be purchased, the installation and future upgrades.”

"TMS Treasurer and Design Committee member Mr. Jim Whitson prepared a proposal to create an even more elaborate string lighting installation that might further elevate our lighting on the square. The committee will be looking at his plan for these designs over the next few weeks,” she added. “Other ideas suggested by Mr. Whitson include outlining the roofs of the buildings immediately around the square and creating corner light structures.”

Pennington and Roehrig believe the lights will make it easier for people to linger longer in the TMS district, and they encourage the entire community to help create great ambiance in our city by participating in Tuesday’s celebration of the newly installed string lights.
