Talladega Parks and Recreation archery team wins big at state

(Talladega, AL) The City of Talladega Parks and Recreation Department youth archery team recently earned three first place trophies and a third place trophy at the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) State Tournament in Dothan, AL.

Izabel Herrin won first place in the 12 and under Girls Division, JW Paris placed 3rd among 12 and under boys, DeAnna Herrin took home first place in the 14 and under girls, and Levi Scaife earned 1st place among 14 and under boys.

“Talladega deserves recognition as the Archery Capital of the South. These exceptional youngsters demonstrated remarkable skill, shooting with precision despite challenging headwinds," said Program Coordinator Luke Thomas, who has served as the archery instructor for eight years. "It has been a privilege to be their coach, and I am immensely proud of their dedication and perseverance."

In addition to being one of the oldest sports in the world, archery is among the nation’s fastest growing sports. Talladega Parks and Recreation formed its first archery team in 2017.  Each year, Talladega’s team competes in the ARPA State Archery Tournament.

“Archery instills discipline, patience, and confidence while also helping to improve focus and teach teamwork skills," said Talladega Parks and Recreation Director Summer Ammons.  “In addition to archery, we offer basketball, baseball, t-ball, softball, soccer, flag football, cheerleading, ballet, track and field, zumba, pickleball, swim, and diverse aquatic programs. We also have activities for seniors, an indoor walking trail, a fitness zone and more.”

“We are fortunate to have talented athletes, a dedicated instructor and an outstanding archery program that brings positive visibility to our community," said City Manager Derrick Swanson. "While many local youth have opted to join athletic teams in neighboring communities, athletes who remain in our parks and recreation programs are continuing to excel."

“As we work to 'reclaim' our youth who have joined programs in other cities, we are improving our facilities, our grounds and our concession stands; getting a new fleet of vans; and doing everything possible to strengthen our programs," Swanson added.
