Talladega Parks and Recreation Department "van-tastic'" news

Talladega Parks and Recreation Department "van-tastic'" news

(Talladega, AL) Talladega Parks and Recreation has "van-tastic" news for residents who use the department’s transportation service for errands, medical appointments and other activities within the city.

“Thanks in part to East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission (EARPDC) funding, the city has acquired a new nine passenger Ford Transit 350 chassis van," said Talladega Parks and Recreation Director Summer Ammons. “EARPDC covered eighty percent of the cost of the $134,866 vehicle, and the city paid twenty percent."

"This is fantastic news for our community," noted Ammons, who added that, as a member of the Area Community Transportation System (ACTS), the city was eligible for the van upgrade.

Angela Curry, a driver who takes Talladega residents to dialysis appointments, shopping trips and other outings, added, "Passengers are thrilled about the new van, which has room for two wheelchairs. They love the way the steps are lower than on the other van. A passenger who uses a walker was able to get up the steps by herself. Passengers are also excited about the chargers and the cup holders. Some noted that the seatbelts are easier to use, and have both shoulder and pelvis straps for added safety. They also love the fresh, new smell."

City Manager Derrick Swanson is thrilled about the new van and other park and recreation plans, including efforts to increase the number of youth participating in the city’s sports programs.

“Many of our youth play sports in other communities. We are excited about bringing them back to Talladega. We want them to know that we are improving our facilities, our grounds and our concession stands. We are getting a new fleet of vans and doing everything we can to strengthen our programs," said Swanson.

Hundreds of children and teens recently enjoyed the city’s first-ever Back to School Bash hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department.

To reserve a van ride, please call the Spring Street Recreation Center one day in advance at 256-362-0514.
