Talladega Police Department awarded a $5000 Norfolk Southern grant
September 19, 2025
(Talladega, AL) The Talladega Police Department is proud to announce that it recently received a $5000.00 grant from Norfolk Southern through its Safety First Grant Program. The funds were used to purchase two new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and four sets of replacement pads.
“We are thankful to Norfolk Southern Corporation for providing funds for this important purchase,” said City Manager Derrick Swanson. “AEDs advance the quality of care in our community by enhancing our officers' ability to provide life-saving assistance during critical situations.”
"AEDs are helping our officers to save lives by decreasing response time for cardiac treatment and preventing fatigue during cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” said Interim Police Chief Ronald McElrath. “A previous grant from Norfolk Southern allowed us to install one AED in the police department and six in patrol cars. With two additional AEDs, we now have enough to cover every car on shift."
Chief McElrath commended City of Talladega employee Anna Eliuk, who serves as a grant writer in the Finance Department, for helping to secure the funds.
This grant is part of Norfolk Southern’s commitment to strengthening the communities it serves across its 22-state network. Launched in 2023, Norfolk Southern’s open-application grant programs are designed to support organizations working to further the areas of safety, sustainability, workforce development, and community resilience. The Safety First Grant Program advances community safety by supporting first responders, emergency preparedness initiatives, and safety education. It honors those who protect our neighborhoods every day and aims to foster a culture of safety throughout Norfolk Southern’s network.
